Kekana says Sundowns have no point to prove in PSL title race

Grant Kekana says Mamelodi Sundowns remain a strong force despite a slower start and five goals conceded in their first three matches.

Grant Kekana says Mamelodi Sundowns are not trying to prove a point as they seek to draw level with Orlando Pirates after three matches. The African champions host Marumo Gallants at Loftus Stadium, with the race for the early PSL lead providing the backdrop.

Sundowns surrendered the league title to Pirates last season, prompting questions about whether the defending champions face a stronger challenge this campaign. Kekana rejected the suggestion that the change in the title race has altered the team’s outlook.

The 33-year-old centre-back said Sundowns remain a formidable side and that their opening performances have contained encouraging signs. He pointed to the team’s control of possession against Kaizer Chiefs as evidence that the champions have not lost their identity.

Sundowns have not been beaten in their three matches this season, while five goals have been conceded across all competitions. Kekana acknowledged that the defensive record needs attention, but said the team’s performances have not given the players reason to panic.

He identified lapses in concentration and set-piece defending as areas still requiring work. The defender added that Sundowns expect to improve in those situations rather than treat the early goals against as a crisis.

The meeting with Marumo Gallants therefore comes with Sundowns trying to close the points gap to Pirates while building momentum. Kekana’s message is that the team’s slower start should be viewed as part of its progress, not as proof that the champions have been weakened.
