Auxerre confirm Elisha Owusu departure after 93 appearances for club

Ghana midfielder Elisha Owusu has left Auxerre for Erzurumspor after 93 appearances, two goals and two-and-a-half seasons in France.

Elisha Owusu has left Auxerre after making 93 appearances for the French club. The 28-year-old Ghana midfielder scored twice during his two-and-a-half-season spell, which began after his move from KAA Gent in January 2023.

Owusu is joining Erzurumspor for a new challenge in Turkey. The club has secured promotion to the Turkish top flight, giving the midfielder another opportunity to continue his career in Europe.

His time at Auxerre included a major part in the club’s return to Ligue 1. Owusu helped the team win the Ligue 2 BKT title before playing in two Ligue 1 campaigns. He also wore the captain’s armband during his spell with the club.

The midfielder did not have an immediate start at Auxerre, with an injury delaying his debut. He later established himself in the team and became an important part of the squad across domestic competition.

Owusu’s two goals for Auxerre came in victories against Troyes and Brest. Those strikes were his only goals for the club, but his 93 appearances reflected his regular involvement after overcoming the early setback.

The departure ends Owusu’s latest period in France, where he had previously represented Lyon and FC Sochaux. He began his professional career with Lyon before moving to Sochaux, returning to Lyon and then joining Gent ahead of his transfer to Auxerre.

Owusu, who holds Ghanaian and French citizenship, has also represented Ghana at the last two FIFA World Cups. He now leaves Auxerre having contributed to the club’s promotion-winning campaign and its subsequent return to France’s top division.
