Kwara SWAN Chairman Ayodeji Ismail hails Taiwo Awoniyi

The Kwara State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (Kwara SWAN) has praised Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi for his character. On the occasion of the 29-year-old's birthday on Wednesday, the association highlighted his commitment to his origins and his community.

Kwara SWAN Chairman Ayodeji Ismail described the Super Eagles forward as a man of virtue who embodies 'Omoluabi' traits. Ismail noted that the striker demonstrates humility, selflessness, and a dedication to serving humanity. He further stated that Awoniyi serves as an inspiration for emerging talents within Kwara State and throughout Nigeria.

Ismail commended the player for his involvement in human empowerment, community development, and social service. The chairman, signing on behalf of the association, noted that Awoniyi remains loyal to his roots despite his long career playing abroad. The association extended well wishes for his health and continued success as he celebrates his birthday alongside his twin sister.

Awoniyi, who was born in Ilorin, began his football journey at the Imperial Football Academy in Odogbolu, Ogun State, in 2010. He rose to prominence during the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup, where he scored four goals to assist Nigeria in winning the tournament. His professional career has included stints at clubs such as Liverpool, FSV Frankfurt, NEC Breda, Germinal Mouscron, AA Gent, SV Mainz 05, and Union Berlin.

The striker has also been a consistent figure in Nigerian youth and senior international football. He participated in the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup and helped the Flying Eagles secure the African U-20 Championship. After scoring twice on his under-23 debut against Zambia in 2015, he was included in the provisional squad for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

At the senior level, Awoniyi was part of the Nigerian squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon. During that tournament, he scored in a 3-1 win against Sudan. He has recorded two goals in his 10 international appearances for the national team.
