Kwasi Sibo completes $10m Al-Swehly move and returns to Accra

Kwasi Sibo has completed a move to Libyan champions Al-Swehly in a package valued at about $10 million and has returned to Accra. The Ghanaian central midfielder is 28 and joins the club after leaving Spanish side Real Oviedo.

Sibo finalised the transfer in Cairo, where Al-Swehly have been preparing for the new season. He passed his medical examinations and signed the required documents there before travelling back to Ghana.

The midfielder selected Al-Swehly after attracting interest from clubs in Europe and North Africa. The alternatives considered included Turkish club Gençlerbirliği, Egyptian side Al Ahly, French club Troyes, Austin FC in the United States and Greek outfit PAOK.

His contract also includes accommodation in Libya. The deal is being presented as a major part of Al-Swehly’s efforts to bring established players to the club, while the wider project is linked to Libya’s ambition to raise the standing of its domestic football.

Sibo’s arrival follows a career spent largely in European football. He moved from Watford to Betis Deportivo, then joined SD Amorebieta before transferring to Real Oviedo. His move to Al-Swehly now takes him into African club football after his spell in Spain.

The transfer also fits into a broader Libyan-backed football initiative that aims to attract prominent players and strengthen the country’s case for hosting the Africa Cup of Nations. Sibo is expected to begin the next stage of his career with Al-Swehly after completing the formalities of the move.
