La Liga to inspect Celta Vigo pitch after fungus outbreak

La Liga officials are scheduled to inspect the pitch at Celta Vigo's Estadio de Balaidos following reports of a suspected fungus outbreak. The inspection will take place within the next 24 hours to determine if the opening match of the 2026-27 season can proceed as planned.

Celta Vigo is due to host Osasuna on Sunday night at 20:30 BST. The fungus infection has reportedly damaged the playing surface, leading Celta Vigo to request a postponement of the fixture. However, Osasuna is reportedly willing to play the match at the scheduled time.

The stadium, which has a capacity of 24,870, has been undergoing renovation for over ten years. It is intended to be one of the 11 Spanish venues used to co-host the 2030 World Cup with Morocco and Portugal. Once the current works are finished, the capacity is expected to rise to between 40,000 and 44,000.

This fixture follows a period of scheduling changes in the league. Three other opening weekend matches—Real Madrid v Real Sociedad, Barcelona v Athletic Club, and Valencia v Real Betis—were moved to later in the month because of players participating in the World Cup final. Celta Vigo previously declined an option to postpone this match regarding striker Borja Iglesias, who reached the World Cup final with Spain.

Estadio de Balaidos was recently used in June for a friendly between Iraq and the Spanish national team, prior to Spain's successful 2026 World Cup campaign.
