Lea Meyer criticises teammates after steeplechase medal loss

German steeplechaser Lea Meyer has directed sharp criticism at her teammates and competitors following a fall in the women's steeplechase at the European Championships. Meyer finished in fourth place after a mistake on the final lap cost her a podium finish.

In an interview with ZDF heute, Meyer claimed she is the premier steeplechaser in Europe and deserved a medal. She targeted gold medallist Gesa Krause and silver medallist Alice Finot of France, suggesting Krause prefers to sit at the back of the pack before sprinting and stating that Finot was not in peak condition.

Despite the criticism, Meyer acknowledged that the winners were the best competitors on the day. She noted that Krause and Finot are older than her and deserved their results, but she maintained her belief that she belongs at the top of European athletics. Meyer also stated her intention to become the German record holder by the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Krause, who earned her third European title, responded to the comments by explaining her tactical approach. She told ntv Sport that her decision to avoid leading the race is a conscious choice, noting that she prefers to exert significant effort during the final kilometre or the final lap of championship races.

Meyer later used Instagram to issue a formal apology for her remarks. She admitted her comments were unprofessional and unsportsmanlike, explaining that they were driven by the emotions of the moment. She clarified that she respects the performances of her rivals and that her frustration was largely directed at her own performance.

Currently, Krause holds the German record with a time of 9:03.30 set in 2019. Meyer's personal best in the event is 9:09.13.
