Lennox Lewis names Froch and Calzaghe among Britain's top three
Lennox Lewis has ranked himself first among Britain’s best fighters of the last 25 years, with Carl Froch second and Joe Calzaghe third.
Lennox Lewis has placed himself at the top of his list of Britain’s three best fighters from the last 25 years, naming Carl Froch second and Joe Calzaghe third. The former heavyweight champion made the choices during an interview with Froch on Fighting.
Lewis did not include another heavyweight in his selection. Instead, he chose Froch and Calzaghe, two super-middleweight rivals whose careers included major titles and high-profile victories. Calzaghe was identified as the third member of the list, while Lewis insisted that his own achievements deserved the first position.
Lewis finished his professional career unbeaten. His only two defeats were against Oliver McCall and Hasim Rahman, and he stopped both men in rematches to regain the heavyweight championship. Those victories made him a three-time ruler of the division.
Froch’s record included wins over Mikkel Kessler, George Groves and Arthur Abraham. He also became a three-time world champion, strengthening his case for inclusion despite never meeting Calzaghe in the ring.
That fight did not happen after Calzaghe gave up his WBC super-middleweight title in 2008. He chose instead to move into the light-heavyweight division, where a more lucrative opportunity awaited, rather than face Froch.
Calzaghe retired undefeated after 46 professional contests and remains the longest-reigning super-middleweight world champion. His final two victories came at light-heavyweight against Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr., adding two defining names to a career that Lewis ranked behind only his own among British fighters of the period.
