Luis Suarez turns to Bible as Sporting struggles intensify
Sporting striker Luis Suarez has shared religious verses amid growing criticism and questions regarding his future at the club.
Sporting forward Luis Suarez has shared a biblical passage on social media as he faces increasing pressure at the club. The Colombian striker posted Psalm 27:3 on Tuesday, which discusses maintaining confidence even when facing an army or war. While Suarez has a history of public faith, the timing follows a difficult period in Lisbon.
This period follows a highly successful previous season where the striker scored 38 goals in 53 appearances across all competitions. He finished as the second-highest scorer in the league with 28 goals. However, his recent form has been marked by a disappointing World Cup with Colombia and a difficult return to club duties after interest from Fenerbahçe.
Former Sporting striker Luis Lourenço has advised the player to accept management decisions and improve his physical fitness. Lourenço noted that Suarez missed pre-season and must fight to regain his position in the squad. He suggested that once the player improves his conditioning, his goal-scoring will return to previous levels.
Speculation regarding a transfer continues, with reports suggesting Suarez may desire a move. Newcastle United have monitored the striker for months and made an approach earlier this summer. Sporting rejected that initial interest and directed interested parties toward his €80m (£69m) release clause.
Lourenço stated that Sporting have not received any formal offers for the player so far. He emphasized that any departure would require an offer to be accepted by the club, which would seek to benefit from their previous investment. He urged Suarez to remain professional and fulfill his obligations to the team.
