Ma’a Nonu performs haka response to All Blacks in Durban

Ma’a Nonu delivered a personal Kapa o Pango haka in response to the All Blacks' challenge during a match in Durban on Tuesday. The former New Zealand centre, now 44 years old, stepped forward to perform his own challenge after the All Blacks unleashed the Ka Mate haka at Hollywood Kings Park Stadium.

The moment occurred during the second fixture of the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry tour. While the Sharks suffered a heavy defeat, failing to score any points as the All Blacks secured 54 unanswered points, the focus remained on Nonu's gesture. The All Blacks returned to their line to show respect to the former player, who made 103 appearances for the national side.

Nonu stated that he felt it was the right thing to do on behalf of himself and his family to answer the team he loves. He described the opportunity to show respect to his former countrymen as a privilege and an honour. During the match, Nonu played for nearly 20 minutes after coming off the bench.

Sharks head coach Dave Rennie confirmed that the performance was planned. Nonu had met with All Blacks defence coach Tana Umaga the previous night to ensure his response would be handled respectfully. Rennie noted that the coaching staff was aware the 'Ma’a haka' was coming.

Nonu currently holds the records for being the oldest appearance maker and try scorer in the Top 14. His career includes two Rugby World Cup titles with New Zealand, having first lifted the trophy in 2015.
