Mackenzie Dern moves to No. 5 after UFC 330 title defence

Mackenzie Dern rose to fifth in the women’s pound-for-pound rankings after defending her UFC strawweight title against Gillian Robertson.

Mackenzie Dern has climbed to No. 5 in the women’s pound-for-pound rankings after defeating Gillian Robertson by unanimous decision at UFC 330 in Philadelphia. The victory was Dern’s first successful defence of the UFC strawweight championship.

The ranking rise came despite Dern’s own dissatisfaction with her showing. Her position improved by one place, taking her above former flyweight title challenger Manon Fiorot after the Philadelphia bout.

The result received less attention in the immediate aftermath because of the split between Robertson and her coach, Din Thomas. That dispute became the main discussion around the co-main event, leaving Dern’s title defence in the background even as it produced a significant rankings gain.

Dern has also acknowledged that she still has work to do. She indicated that she would not want to meet former strawweight champion Zhang Weili while performing at the level she showed on August 15. Zhang remains one of the fighters ranked above Dern, alongside Natalia Silva, who is reported to be a challenger for Valentina Shevchenko.

The latest rankings brought few major changes after the Philadelphia event. Dern was the most prominent mover, with her first defence lifting her into the top five despite remaining behind non-champions in the pound-for-pound order.

Neil Magny and Charles Johnson also entered their respective divisional rankings after victories on August 15. Both now occupy the No. 15 position, adding two new names to the lists while Dern’s title defence remained the defining rankings development from UFC 330.
