Madugu apologises as Super Falcons miss 2027 World Cup

Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has admitted that the team's best performance was insufficient to secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup. Nigeria's participation in the tournament has ended following a 2-1 loss to South Africa in the qualifying play-off on Thursday.

The defeat marks a historic setback for the nation, as Nigeria will miss the Women's World Cup for the first time since the inaugural tournament in 1991. This result breaks the country's record of appearing in every single edition of the competition.

Speaking after the match, Madugu apologised to the Nigerian public and took full responsibility for the failure to qualify. He stated that while the team attempted to do their best, it was not enough to progress. Addressing potential calls for his dismissal, the coach said he was not afraid of being sacked, noting that it had been a privilege to serve his country.

Madugu attributed the loss to defensive errors and a lack of clinical finishing. He noted that South Africa capitalised on mistakes made at the back and that the team struggled to convert the chances they created. He suggested that the errors might have been caused by overconfidence or complacency.

During the play-off, Nigeria had several opportunities in the first half to take control of the game but failed to score. South Africa was more efficient, taking advantage of their openings to secure the 2-1 win.

In his tenure, Madugu has managed nearly 28 matches. His record includes 19 victories, four draws, and four defeats, though he acknowledged that the loss to South Africa occurred at a critical moment in the campaign.
