Eckert praises Southampton attacking depth ahead of new season

Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has expressed his satisfaction with the attacking options available to him as he enters his first full season in charge. The manager highlighted the depth in his squad following the arrival of 21-year-old striker Divin Mubama at St Mary’s.

Eckert noted that the combination of Mubama and Cyle Larin could prove effective due to their different age profiles. Larin, who joined from RCD Mallorca on loan in January last season, has shown physical improvement according to the manager. Eckert suggested that Larin's attitude toward the younger Mubama is positive, viewing the newcomer as someone to support rather than a direct rival for the number nine position.

The manager described having multiple quality attacking options as a luxury, particularly regarding the ability to impact matches from the bench. This was evidenced during the recent Carabao Cup victory against Colchester, where substitutes Cameron Bragg, Finn Azaz, and Romeo Akachukwu all featured. Eckert also recalled Larin's ability to change games, noting his debut goal against Watford last season.

Regarding the new signing, Eckert stated he has been aware of Mubama's potential since his time as the club's Under-21 manager. He observed the striker's ability to score goals during a match against City and described him as an ambitious player with senior experience. Eckert added that Mubama is capable of finishing with both feet, despite having a stronger left foot.

Preparation for the upcoming campaign is already underway, with Mubama reportedly taking the initiative to learn about his new teammates and their preferences. The squad prepares to face Watford in their Sky Bet Championship season opener this Sunday.
