Martínez believes Boniface can earn his Leverkusen place back

Bayer Leverkusen head coach Carles Martínez believes Victor Boniface understands the requirements needed to reclaim his spot in the starting lineup. The manager noted that the striker's quality is evident and that the player is making progress.

Boniface is working to rebuild his career following a challenging loan period at Werder Bremen during the 2025/26 season. The 25-year-old made only 11 Bundesliga appearances for Bremen and failed to score a goal before knee issues required surgery in January.

Since returning to Leverkusen this summer, the Nigerian international has shown improvements in preseason. He has appeared more effective when playing in congested areas and has shown better control of the ball. However, he currently sits behind Patrik Schick and Christian Kofane in the team's hierarchy of centre-forwards.

Managing director Simon Rolfes also commented on the striker's recovery process. Rolfes stated that while the player had a difficult year, his fitness is improving steadily. He noted that such progress occurs in stages rather than all at once, but indicated that the situation is moving in a positive direction.

Boniface expressed his gratitude to the Leverkusen supporters for their continued backing during his recent struggles. He noted that the support of the fans is essential for the players and said he is very happy to be back.
