Velebayi seeks breakthrough against Sundowns after Baartman goal
Kaizer Chiefs forward Velebayi aims to improve his scoring record in the upcoming match against Mamelodi Sundowns following teammate Baartman's success.
Kaizer Chiefs forward Velebayi is aiming to increase his goal contributions during the upcoming league fixture against Mamelodi Sundowns. The player is looking to build on a productive pre-season in Spain by finding his scoring rhythm in official competitions.
Velebayi has expressed that the recent success of teammate Baartman has served as a motivation. Baartman recently scored his first goal for the club during a 2-0 victory over Sekhukhune United at FNB Stadium. Both players developed through the Spurs academy structures and share a close bond.
After making 15 appearances across all competitions last season, Velebayi is seeking greater consistency this term. He noted that while the upcoming match against the African champions will be difficult, the team enters the game with confidence after winning their first two league matches.
The player also commented on the high standards set by coach Fernando Da Cruz. Velebayi described the Frenchman as a demanding manager who expects players to constantly improve and provide extra effort even when they are performing well. Both Velebayi and Baartman have seen significant playing time since the start of the season under his leadership.
Other former Spurs academy players are also present in the current squad, including Faiz Abrahams. Abrahams joined the club on loan from Stellenbosch FC, though Chiefs hold an option to purchase him permanently.
