Manchester City sign Geronimo Rulli from Marseille on two-year deal

Manchester City have completed the signing of Argentine goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Marseille. The 34-year-old has committed to a two-year contract with the Premier League champions.

Rulli returns to the Etihad Stadium for a second spell after nine years. He was previously part of the Manchester City squad during the 2016/17 season, though he did not feature for the first team during that period. He is expected to act as the second-choice goalkeeper behind Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The veteran goalkeeper brings significant international experience to the squad. He has earned eight caps for Argentina and was a member of the 2022 World Cup-winning team. His recent international involvement includes the 2024 Copa America victory and a recent World Cup final appearance against Spain.

Before joining City, Rulli played for several clubs including Ajax, Montpellier, Villarreal, and Real Sociedad. He is also noted for his role in the 2021 Europa League final, where he scored a penalty and saved a spot-kick from David de Gea to help Villarreal defeat Manchester United in a shootout.

Marseille's sale of Rulli comes as the French side looks to generate funds through player departures. The club is working to address financial requirements following a €10m fine for failing to meet UEFA break-even targets. This follows other recent exits at the club, including the sale of Facundo Medina to Bayer Leverkusen and the departures of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mason Greenwood.

Marseille's recent season also saw them finish fifth in Ligue 1, resulting in a failure to qualify for the Champions League.
