Manchester United win Boyle Sports Cup on penalties after Leeds draw

Manchester United won the Boyle Sports Cup after defeating Leeds United 5-4 on penalties. The pre-season friendly at Croke Park in Dublin ended in a 1-1 draw after regulation time on Wednesday.

Joshua Zirkzee put United ahead in the 16th minute following an assist from Bryan Mbeumo. Leeds United equalised shortly after through Brenden Aaronson, who beat goalkeeper Senne Lammens. Neither team managed to score during the second half, leading to a shootout.

United won the trophy in sudden death. After Bruno Fernandes missed his penalty, Noussair Mazraoui scored the decisive kick to secure the victory. This marks the second pre-season trophy for Michael Carrick’s squad.

Michael Carrick expressed satisfaction with his team's performance in the first half, noting they played high-quality football and created several chances. He observed that Leeds improved after the interval and noted the importance of giving players minutes during the second half. Carrick also commended the performance of the club's younger players.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke said the draw against Manchester United would provide a confidence boost for his side. He praised new goalkeeper James Trafford, stating the player has the potential to reach a world-class level if his current form continues.

Manchester United will play their final pre-season match against AC Milan in Wroclaw this Saturday. Their Premier League season begins next weekend against Hull City.
