Manqoba Mngqithi wins Community Shield with Yanga against Simba

Manqoba Mngqithi secured his first trophy at Young Africans SC with a 1-0 victory over Simba SC in the Tanzanian Community Shield.

Manqoba Mngqithi secured his first trophy as Young Africans SC head coach with a 1-0 victory over Simba SC. The win in the Tanzanian Community Shield marks a successful start to Mngqithi's tenure at the club.

This match served as the curtain raiser for the Tanzania Premier League. It featured the league champions, Young Africans, against the CRDB Federation Cup winners, Simba SC. The encounter was the first Kariakoo Derby between Mngqithi and Simba coach Steve Barker.

The victory allows Young Africans to equal Simba as the most successful clubs in this competition. By lifting the Community Shield for the 10th time, Yanga has matched the record held by their rivals. This win also represents the third consecutive trophy for the club.

For Simba SC, the defeat ends a significant domestic unbeaten run. Under Steve Barker, the team had gone 30 games without a loss in domestic competitions. The result provides a setback for the former Stellenbosch FC coach and his squad.

Simba SC has not won the Community Shield since 2023. Mngqithi's side used the tightly-contested match to claim the opening silverware of the new season.
