McInnes praises Bafana defender Makhanya after Rangers debut

Rangers boss Derek McInnes has praised South African defender Olwethu Makhanya after his composed UEFA Conference League debut for the club.

Rangers head coach Derek McInnes has praised 22-year-old Bafana Bafana defender Olwethu Makhanya after his UEFA Conference League debut. The appearance was Makhanya’s first in the competition since joining the Scottish club from Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union.

Makhanya played a composed role as Rangers opened their European campaign, giving McInnes an early positive sign during a period of considerable change in the squad. The defender has also made his domestic debut at Ibrox since arriving in Scotland.

McInnes said Makhanya had adapted well despite moving from MLS into a different style and pace of football. He highlighted the South African’s ability to defend opponents closely, stay with them in races and remain calm when in possession.

The Rangers manager was also pleased that Makhanya handled the demands of entering a team that has not yet reached its best level. The defender arrived from outside the existing group and has been working to settle into a side still being reshaped under McInnes.

Makhanya’s early progress adds to a strong start to his move to Europe. Before joining Rangers, the former Stellenbosch player established himself with Philadelphia Union and earned recognition at international level with Bafana Bafana.

McInnes said Rangers are integrating several young players and that the process will require time. He nevertheless believes Makhanya has made a strong impression and expects the defender to offer more as his adjustment to Scottish football continues.
