Medeama’s rise since 2010 puts them behind only Kotoko in Ghana
Medeama have won six major domestic trophies since 2010, placing them behind Asante Kotoko as Ghana’s second most successful club in that period.
Medeama have emerged as Ghana’s second most successful football club since 2010, winning six major domestic trophies. Their haul comprises two Ghana Premier League titles, two MTN FA Cups and two Ghana Super Cups, leaving them behind only Asante Kotoko, who have 12 trophies under the same measure.
The club’s transformation began when Moses Armah took over Kessben FC in 2010. The team was formally renamed Medeama SC in 2011, beginning a rise that has taken it from a relatively recent presence in the top flight to one of Ghana’s leading sides.
Medeama’s domestic record during this period has surpassed that of Hearts of Oak, AshantiGold SC, Aduana FC and Berekum Chelsea. The progress has been driven by Armah’s ownership and financial backing, with Vice President Rose Linet Osei Bonsu, board and management members, coaches, players and other technical staff also contributing to the club’s development.
Their progress has extended to African competition. Medeama have made three major CAF appearances since 2010, reaching the group stage twice and the play-off round once. In the 2014 CAF Confederation Cup, they overcame Morocco’s Maghreb de Fès and Zambia’s ZESCO United before losing to AC Léopards on penalties after a 2-2 aggregate draw.
The club went further in 2016, beating Al-Ittihad Tripoli and Al-Ahly Shendi before eliminating Mamelodi Sundowns on away goals. After a 3-1 defeat in South Africa, Medeama won the return leg 2-0 at Essipong Sports Stadium to reach the Confederation Cup group stage.
Medeama later claimed their first Ghana Premier League title and made their debut in the CAF Champions League in 2023. Victories over Nigeria’s Remo Stars and Guinea’s Horoya AC took them into a group containing Al Ahly, CR Belouizdad and Young Africans. They collected four points but did not reach the quarter-finals.
Armah has said he spends about US$800,000 per season on the club. Medeama have also competed with Hearts of Oak, Kotoko and Aduana for players and secured some of their targets, showing an ambition to challenge for more trophies after winning their second league title.
