Michael Chiesa says Islam Makhachev belongs on MMA Mount Rushmore

Michael Chiesa says Islam Makhachev belongs among MMA’s all-time greats, alongside Demetrious Johnson, Georges St-Pierre and Daniel Cormier.

Islam Makhachev belongs on mixed martial arts’ Mount Rushmore in Michael Chiesa’s view. The MMA analyst has placed him alongside Demetrious Johnson, Georges St-Pierre and Daniel Cormier when naming the four fighters who best represent the sport’s greatest figures.

Makhachev’s case is built on his recent UFC success across the lightweight and welterweight divisions. He has added another victory at welterweight by defeating Ian Machado Garry, continuing a run that has strengthened his standing in discussions about the sport’s all-time greats.

The Russian fighter’s record includes a defeat, a point that can count against him in comparisons with unbeaten or almost unbeaten legends. Jon Jones has not lost outside a disqualification, while Makhachev’s mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov retired without a defeat. Makhachev, however, has put together a 17-fight winning streak, a run described as unprecedented at this level.

Chiesa also believes Makhachev has moved past St-Pierre in the all-time debate. His argument focuses on what both champions achieved after moving up in weight. St-Pierre competed once at middleweight, while Makhachev has fought twice at welterweight and does not plan to return to lightweight.

The comparison also reflects how reputations can change over time. Chiesa acknowledged that St-Pierre’s wins over established opponents such as Matt Hughes and Johny Hendricks remain central to his legacy, but said Makhachev’s accomplishments now give him a stronger claim in the discussion.

Chiesa’s proposed Mount Rushmore includes Johnson, Makhachev, St-Pierre and Cormier. He also attached importance to success both inside and outside the cage, while recognising that placing Makhachev above St-Pierre is an opinion likely to divide MMA fans.
