Modiba urges Sundowns response against AmaZulu in PSL round four

Mamelodi Sundowns and AmaZulu each have seven points from three matches ahead of their South African Premier Soccer League meeting. Sundowns are third in the table, with AmaZulu directly behind them in fourth on the same total.

The sides will meet on 26 August in the fourth round, with Aubrey Modiba urging Sundowns to bounce back. The fixture gives the champions a chance to respond to an uneven run of results and strengthen their position near the top of the standings.

Sundowns have drawn three of their last five matches, alongside one victory and one defeat. Their sequence began with a 1-1 draw against MC Alger, followed by a 2-0 loss to Al-Hilal Saudi. They then drew 1-1 with Hertha Berlin, beat RB Leipzig 3-1 and drew 1-1 with FAR Rabat.

That run leaves Sundowns needing greater consistency as they prepare to face a team level with them on points. Their only win in the sequence came against Leipzig, while the other four matches produced three draws and a defeat. Modiba’s call for a response comes before a league game that could separate the two teams in the early table.

AmaZulu arrive with a mixed but competitive record of their own. They opened the relevant sequence with a 1-0 win over Durban City, then lost 1-0 to Kaizer Chiefs. Draws against Orbit College and Golden Arrows followed, before they ended the run with a 5-1 victory over Chippa United.

The visitors’ recent results include two wins, two draws and one loss, while their position shows they have made the same seven-point start as Sundowns. The round-four contest therefore carries importance for both clubs, with Sundowns seeking the response Modiba has called for and AmaZulu looking to move ahead of their table rivals.
