Mutharika celebrates Scorchers reaching WAFCON final

President Peter Mutharika and First Lady Gertrude have congratulated the Scorchers following their historic qualification for the WAFCON final.

President Peter Mutharika and First Lady Gertrude have extended their congratulations to the Malawi Scorchers following their qualification for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final. The national team secured their place in the championship match after defeating Algeria 3-1 on Wednesday night.

In a message posted to their official pages, the Mutharikas described the achievement as a significant and valuable moment in the nation's history. They commended the players for their commitment and the determination shown while representing Malawi during the tournament in Morocco. The President noted that the victory over Algeria represented more than a standard semi-final win.

Malawi has become the first debutant nation to reach the final of the WAFCON tournament. President Mutharika highlighted that the team is now only 90 minutes away from winning the top prize in African women's football. The semi-final victory was driven by two goals from Tabitha Chawinga and a goal from Temwa Chawinga.

This successful campaign has also resulted in Malawi qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil next year. The Scorchers' run in Morocco has secured both a continental final appearance and a spot in the upcoming global tournament.

The Scorchers will compete in the final on Sunday against Cameroon. Cameroon secured their place in the match after defeating the host nation, Morocco.
