Nanevie wins Over-50 title at 2026 USATT New York State meet

Ghana’s Courage Nanevie won the Over-50 crown and took Under-40 silver at the 2026 USATT New York State Championships.

Courage Nanevie won the Over-50 title at the 2026 USATT New York State Championships after beating Winston Wang 3-2 in the final. Wang later defeated Nanevie 3-2 in another final, leaving the Ghanaian with gold and silver from the championships.

Nanevie competed in the Westchester Monthly Medal competition against players holding USATT Gold and Silver memberships. The field included both citizens and non-citizens, with the Ghanaian producing one of the strongest performances of the event.

His route to the Over-50 final began with an 11-7, 11-7, 11-7 victory over Brian Moran. He then overcame Stephen Finn 11-9, 11-5, 11-7 to set up the deciding match against Wang.

Nanevie completed the Over-50 contest by edging Wang in five games. The win put him in contention for a second championship success, but Wang responded in the other final and secured a 3-2 victory over him in the Under-40 event.

The result gave Nanevie the Under-40 silver medal while Wang claimed gold in that category. It also made the Ghanaian one of the competition’s leading performers, despite his failure to win both finals.

Nanevie was pleased with his showing but acknowledged that he had targeted victory in each category. He said the difficult second final would provide motivation for his next championship appearance and added that he wanted to beat Wang if they meet again.
