Nathan Opoku targets fast Northampton start after Newport spell
Nathan Opoku believes his Newport County loan has prepared him to make an immediate impact for Northampton Town in League Two.
Nathan Opoku is aiming to make an immediate impact at Northampton Town after joining from Leicester City on a three-year deal. The Ghanaian forward believes his time with Newport County has prepared him for the demands of League Two.
Opoku spent last season on loan at Newport, where he made 16 starts and scored six goals. That return made him the Exiles’ leading scorer for the 2025/26 campaign and gave him a strong platform before his move to Northampton.
His experience of the division is central to his confidence. Opoku has already encountered the physical demands and competitive nature of League Two, and expects that familiarity to help him settle without needing a long adaptation period.
The forward can operate across the attacking line, offering Northampton pace and flexibility in forward areas. Those qualities will be part of his role as he seeks to carry his Newport form into a new team and contribute to the club’s campaign.
Opoku also took part in Leicester’s first-team pre-season preparations and scored during that involvement. He has completed his summer work and considers himself fit and ready to play for Northampton.
The move gives Opoku another chance to build on his progress in English football. His Newport campaign provided regular senior experience and goals, while his Leicester pre-season involvement added further confidence before the next stage of his career.
