Ngwenya scores twice as AmaZulu fall to Sekhukhune United

Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya scored twice during AmaZulu's 4-3 extra-time loss to Sekhukhune United in the MTN8 quarter-final on Sunday. The Zimbabwean international's brace at Chatsworth Stadium was not enough to prevent the Durban-based club from being knocked out of the competition.

Ngwenya opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a volley that beat goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi. After AmaZulu trailed 3-1, the striker scored a diving header from a Mondli Mbanjwa cross in the 56th minute to bring the score closer. Taariq Fielies scored two minutes later to force extra time, but Vuyo Letlapa scored in the 97th minute to secure the win for Sekhukhune United.

This performance marks Ngwenya's third goal in AmaZulu's first two competitive matches of the season. He previously scored the only goal in a 1-0 Betway Premiership win against Stellenbosch, which he converted from a second-half penalty after Mosa Lebusa fouled Athini Maqokola.

The 23-year-old is building on a productive debut season in South Africa. Despite a foot injury that limited his appearances, he finished as the club's top scorer with eight goals in 20 games last season. He scored seven of those goals in 17 league matches to win the club's Golden Boot.

Ngwenya stated that his previous season was difficult due to injury but expressed gratitude to the club and coaching staff for their support. He noted that winning the Golden Boot despite his time on the sidelines provided him with confidence. He said his current goal is to be a reliable player for Arthur Zwane's side and to potentially challenge for the PSL Golden Boot.

Ngwenya will look to maintain his scoring form when AmaZulu host Orlando Pirates in a Betway Premiership match this Wednesday.
