Nigeria and South Africa face off in World Cup playoff qualifier

Nigeria and South Africa face each other this evening at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca to compete for a chance at the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup. The winner of this African playoff will advance to an intercontinental tournament in February next year. Both the Super Falcons and Banyana Banyana missed out on direct qualification for the tournament in Brazil after failing to reach the semi-finals of the recent Women Africa Cup of Nations. They now face a high-stakes encounter to secure a path through the intercontinental playoffs. Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire are also in contention for the second African ticket to that playoff stage.

This match follows a dramatic WAFCON semi-final held in Casablanca one year and 22 days ago. In that encounter, Nigeria secured a 2-1 victory following a late goal from defender Michelle Alozie. Both sides had previously scored from the penalty spot during that match.

Historical data shows a competitive rivalry between the two sides. South Africa has won three Women Africa Cup of Nations editions against Nigeria, specifically in 2012, 2018, and 2022. However, the 10-time African champions have won 17 other competitive meetings between the two nations. In their most recent Olympic qualifying duel, Nigeria progressed after Rasheedat Ajibade scored a penalty during a two-match series.

Nigeria's captain Rasheedat Ajibade will lead the Super Falcons, while South Africa features Thembi Kgatlana. Following a match against Cameroon where the team struggled with finishing, Nigeria's coach Justin Madugu is expected to select more clinical attackers for this fixture.
