Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa dominate WAFCON history

Since the inception of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations in 1991, only three nations have managed to win the trophy. Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, and South Africa are the only countries to have secured the continental championship.

Nigeria remains the most successful nation in the history of the competition. The Super Falcons have won a record ten titles, including their most recent championship in 2025. They secured that latest title by overcoming a two-goal deficit to beat Morocco 3-2 in the final.

Nigeria's championship history includes victories in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2025. Their first official win occurred in 1998 with a 2-0 victory over Ghana. They followed this with a 2-0 win against South Africa in 2000, a 2-0 win over Ghana in 2002, a 5-0 win against Cameroon in 2004, and a 1-0 win over Ghana in 2006.

After missing out in 2008, Nigeria won the 2010 final by beating Equatorial Guinea 4-2. They later won titles in 2014, 2016, and 2018. The 2018 title was decided by a 4-3 penalty shootout following a goalless draw with South Africa. The Super Falcons also hold records for the most appearances, goals, and wins in the tournament.

Equatorial Guinea is the only other nation to have won the tournament more than once. They became the first team other than Nigeria to win the trophy in 2008, defeating South Africa 2-1 in the final after knocking Nigeria out in the semi-finals. They won their second title in 2012 with a 4-0 win over South Africa in the final.

South Africa has won the competition one time. After finishing as runners-up in five previous editions, Banyana Banyana won their first title in 2022. They defeated the hosts, Morocco, 2-1 in the final held in Rabat.
