Everton FC sign Ghanaian midfielder Melvin Matos to pro deal

Everton FC have secured the future of Ghanaian midfielder Melvin Matos with his first professional contract. The Bedford-born midfielder has signed a two-year deal that will keep him at the Merseyside club until the summer of 2028.

Matos, who is eligible to represent both Ghana and England at the senior international level, joined the club from Norwich City. He has since progressed through the academy ranks, making 15 appearances for the Under-18 side during his debut campaign and 22 appearances last season. During that period, he also captained the Under-18s on five occasions and made his debut for the Under-21 side.

Following his recent performances, Matos has been promoted to the reserve squad for the upcoming season. He noted that his development has been significant since arriving at the club, highlighting his experience of captaining the youth side as a proud moment in his progression.

The signing comes alongside structural changes within the Everton Academy. Dave Hughes has taken on a new role as the Head of Academy Player Development, overseeing the Under-21s, while Matthew Taylor has joined the staff as the new Under-18s Head Coach.

Matos expressed his happiness with the new contract, describing the move as a dream come true and a positive step for his career. He also commented on the high morale at the Finch Farm training ground and the welcoming nature of the newly appointed coaching staff.
