Nigeria MiniFootball women’s team set for Sunday Agege exhibition

Nigeria’s first women’s MiniFootball national team will play an exhibition match in Agege on Sunday as the 2026 league reaches its closing ceremony. The fixture will feature players being considered for Nigeria’s six-a-side squad for the continental championship scheduled for September.

The match is part of the Nigeria MiniFootball Association’s selection programme for the Africa MiniFootball Confederation Women’s Nations Cup in Yaounde, Cameroon. The tournament will also determine Africa’s qualifier for the WMF Women’s World Cup, adding significance to the ongoing process of assembling the Nigerian team.

Nigeria has been included among the eight countries due to take part in the inaugural women’s 6-a-side competition. The Agege exhibition will therefore offer the national technical crew another opportunity to assess players before the continental event, rather than serving as a competitive international fixture.

The selection process has already included further evaluations at Keke Primary School Playing Field. Players who advanced through earlier stages were assessed alongside talents from the Lagos MiniFootball League, with places in the national team still being contested.

The exhibition is also the closing activity for the 2026 league, which has been used as an official pathway for identifying players. Agege Local Government chairman Abdul-Ganiyu Vinod Obasa, who is also chairman of the Lagos State MiniFootball Association, is expected to attend with other invited personalities.

The development comes as Nigeria’s conventional women’s national team sit second at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with six points from three matches, having won two and lost one while scoring nine goals and conceding five. Their recent five-match sequence is three wins and two defeats, including victories over Tanzania, Senegal and Cameroon, alongside losses to Senegal and Cameroon. The MiniFootball programme is a separate national-team project, with its focus now on selection ahead of the September championship.
