MTN Elite U-19 Championship 2026 gets underway in Prampram

The second edition of the MTN Elite U-19 Championship began on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram. The 11-day competition features young footballers representing regions from across Ghana.

The opening ceremony preceded the first round of matches, with the event formally launched by Hon. Eric Edem Agbana, chairman of the planning committee and Member of Parliament for Ketu North. Ghana Football Association Executive Council member Samuel Aboabire and National Juvenile Committee chairman Joe Salam Abubakar also attended.

The organising committee was represented by vice-chairman Enoch Agyare Addo, alongside members Samuel Owusu Amoah and Michael Fiaduse. The tournament is sponsored by MTN Ghana and is being staged under the GFA’s “Power to the Youth” initiative.

Volta Region and Ashanti Region met in the opening Group A fixture. In the other Group A match on the schedule, defending champions Eastern Region started their title defence against Upper West Region.

Group B opened with Central Region facing Brong Ahafo Region, while Upper East Region was scheduled to play Northern Region. The regional format gives the participating players competitive matches during the 11-day programme.

The championship is designed to support the development of young footballers by giving them a platform to gain experience and draw the attention of scouts and national-team selectors. Eastern Region entered the tournament seeking to retain the title it won in the first edition.
