NSA boss expects World Cup revenue to fund stadium upgrades

National Sports Authority Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah believes revenue from Ghana's participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup can be used to upgrade the nation's sporting facilities. He expects these funds to support the necessary rehabilitation of stadiums and playing surfaces ahead of the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana is set to host the 2027 U-20 AFCON, a tournament that aligns with the country's 70th independence anniversary. This will be the second time the nation hosts the competition, following the previous edition held in 1999. Meeting CAF infrastructure requirements for the tournament will necessitate significant investment in local venues.

Ankrah cited the Democratic Republic of Congo as a model, noting that the country has already released a plan regarding the use of its World Cup earnings. He expressed confidence that the Ghana Football Association will eventually adopt a similar approach to fund development.

Discussions regarding the allocation of these funds are currently in progress. Ankrah has asked the public to remain patient and optimistic while stakeholders work to secure the required resources. He stated that the NSA is prepared to direct any incoming money toward essential infrastructure improvements.

Securing adequate funding remains vital for Ghana to ensure its facilities meet the standards required for major continental competitions. The NSA head indicated that the authority is ready to undertake the necessary rehabilitation works once the financial arrangements are finalised.
