Olopade tells D’Tigers to turn quality into results in FIBA qualifiers

The fourth window of the FIBA World Cup qualifiers has been identified as a decisive stage for Nigeria’s D’Tigers, with the team set to play three matches in Rades, Tunisia. The 12-man squad begins against Cameroon on Thursday, meets South Sudan on Friday and completes its schedule against Cape Verde on August 30.

National Sports Commission director-general Bukola Olopade wants the team to make its quality count in the results. He said Nigeria has both a strong group of players and a capable technical staff, but must now improve its prospects of reaching the World Cup in Qatar.

Olopade described the window as a significant moment for Nigerian basketball and called on the players to approach the games with unity, discipline and the fighting spirit associated with the country’s teams. His message was centred on maintaining focus on qualification rather than relying on the talent available in the squad.

D’Tigers are led by United States coach David Fizdale, with Dan Craig, Quinton Crawford, Deji Akindele and Dapo Adegibile also part of the coaching staff. The playing group includes Chimezie Metu, Josh Okogie, Caleb Agada, Stan Okoye, Chima Moneke and Ike Nwamu.

Udoka Azubuike, Efe Abogidi, Ebuka Izundu, Manny Obaseki, Jordan Ogundiran and Paul Dibal complete the travelling squad. The three-game schedule gives Nigeria an immediate opportunity to strengthen its position in the qualifying race, with each result carrying weight at this stage of the elimination series.

Olopade expressed confidence in the players and the coaches to represent Nigeria effectively. He also said the NSC and Nigerians were behind the team as D’Tigers pursue a place at the FIBA World Cup.
