Parliament presents 2026 Democracy Cup trophy to Military High Command

Parliament has presented the 2026 Democracy Cup trophy to Ghana’s Military High Command ahead of Friday’s meeting between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko in Kumasi. The fixture will be played at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium as part of the third edition of the competition.

A parliamentary delegation visited Burma Camp on Monday for the presentation. It was led by Clerk to Parliament Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror and included former Ghana captain John Mensah, who serves as an ambassador for the Democracy Cup.

The visit was organised to build support for this year’s event and encourage the Ghana Armed Forces to take part. The competition is designed to use football to promote democratic governance, with the trophy presentation forming part of its preparations.

Djietror extended an invitation to the military during the visit. Chief of Defence Staff Lieutenant General William Agyapong accepted the invitation and said the armed forces would support the event and attend Friday’s programme at the stadium.

The Hearts-Kotoko fixture will renew one of Ghana’s major football rivalries. Asante Kotoko won the first Democracy Cup, while Hearts of Oak lifted last year’s trophy after beating Great Olympics.

The headline match will follow several curtain-raisers, including a contest between the Parliamentary XI and the Judiciary XI. The programme will therefore bring together the two leading league rivals alongside representatives from Ghana’s state institutions.
