Proteas Women coach welcomes Geoffrey Toyana's Titans role
Mashimbyi has welcomed Geoffrey Toyana to the Titans women’s team and says his experience can strengthen the franchise and women’s cricket.
Proteas Women coach Mashimbyi has welcomed Geoffrey Toyana’s arrival in the women’s game, saying his experience can benefit both the Titans women’s team and South African women’s cricket. Toyana has taken up a coaching assignment with the Titans after previously working with Easterns and the Lions.
Mashimbyi believes Toyana’s record makes him a valuable addition to the franchise. The Proteas coach described him as a proven winner and said the Titans could benefit from his ability as they seek to establish greater dominance in domestic cricket.
The two coaches have worked together before, and Mashimbyi has made himself available to Toyana as he begins the new role. He said Toyana already has his contact details and can call if he requires help or advice during the assignment.
Toyana’s appointment comes as women’s cricket continues to expand, a development he has linked partly to the growth of T20 leagues around the world. He believes those competitions have helped create more opportunities for players and contributed to the progress of the women’s game.
The former Easterns and Lions coach also wants more South African players to gain experience in overseas T20 leagues. In his view, that exposure can help raise the level of the Proteas Women when those players return to the national setup.
Creating pathways for improvement will be central to Toyana’s approach at the Titans. He sees it as a coaching responsibility to give players room to develop and to encourage them as they progress, a philosophy he plans to take into his new position.
