PSG earn €5 million after defeating Aston Villa in Super Cup

Paris Saint-Germain collected a total of €5 million for winning the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, August 12. The French side secured the trophy with a 2-1 victory against Aston Villa at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg.

Both participating clubs received a guaranteed appearance fee of €4 million. PSG increased their total earnings by adding a €1 million winner's bonus to their take, while Aston Villa finished the competition with only the €4 million runner-up fee.

The match was decided by a goal from Désiré Doué in the 60th minute. After receiving a pass from substitute Ousmane Dembélé, Doué beat the defensive line and curled a left-footed shot into the corner. Although the assistant referee initially signaled for offside, VAR ruled that Matty Cash had inadvertently played Doué onside, allowing the goal to stand.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring for PSG in the 20th minute by driving a low shot past goalkeeper Marco Bizot after cutting in from the left. Aston Villa equalised in the 45th minute when Brian Madjo volleyed a cross from John McGinn into the net. Madjo, making his senior debut, became the youngest player to score in the history of the UEFA Super Cup.

Unai Emery's Aston Villa side pushed forward for an equaliser during the final stages of the game. However, the team managed by Luis Enrique maintained their defensive shape to protect the lead and retain the title for the second consecutive year.
