Roberto Martinez in talks to become Netherlands head coach

Roberto Martinez has entered discussions regarding the vacant head coach position with the Netherlands national team. Dutch technical director Nigel de Jong reportedly travelled to Malaga to hold face-to-face meetings with the 53-year-old manager.

The search for a new leader follows the departure of Ronald Koeman. Koeman left his post after the Netherlands suffered a round of 32 exit against Morocco, losing the match on penalties.

Martinez brings significant international management experience to the negotiations. He previously led Belgium for six years, a tenure that included a third-place finish at the 2018 World Cup. During his time with the Belgian side, they also reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 before being eliminated by Italy.

His most recent role was with Portugal, where he managed for four years. His time with the Portuguese national team concluded following a quarter-final penalty loss to France at Euro 2024 and a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the round of 16 during this summer's World Cup.

The Netherlands have reportedly been unsuccessful in their attempts to secure domestic candidates for the role. Local reports indicate that Arne Slot, Erik ten Hag, and Peter Bosz have all declined the opportunity.

If Martinez is appointed, he would become the first foreign manager to lead the Netherlands since Ernst Happel managed the side in the 1970s.
