Robinson and Tongue put England in command after Pakistan's 171

Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue claimed five wickets each as Pakistan were dismissed for 171, before England reached 112-2 at Headingley.

England closed on 112-2 after Pakistan were bowled out for 171 at Headingley, with Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue taking five wickets apiece. The hosts trail by 59 runs and will resume with Joe Root unbeaten on 37 alongside Jordan Cox on 23.

England chose to field after winning the toss and Robinson made an immediate impact. He trapped Azan Awais lbw with the opening delivery, then removed Pakistan captain Shan Masood before rain interrupted the innings.

Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq rebuilt Pakistan’s innings with a fourth-wicket stand worth 91. Shafique scored 61 and Imam contributed 42, but Tongue ended their partnership when Imam was caught behind at second slip by Harry Brook.

Robinson then claimed Saud Shakeel lbw. Pakistan did not review the decision because the time limit had passed, although replays suggested the ball would have gone past leg stump. Shafique followed soon afterwards, edging Robinson through the gap between bat and pad as Pakistan fell to 118-5.

Tongue took control of the lower order. Salman Agha made 21, but Tongue dismissed Ali Usman with the next delivery and also removed Mohammad Rizwan. His decisive spell brought four wickets for five runs in 11 balls, and he finished with 5-46 from 9.1 overs. Robinson’s 5-51 came from 18 overs, while Mohammad Abbas was Tongue’s final victim as Pakistan were dismissed in 48.1 overs. Their last seven wickets produced only 54 runs.

England’s reply was not without difficulty. Abbas dismissed Ben Duckett and Mohammad Ali removed debutant Emilio Gay, leaving the hosts 48-2. Root and Cox then added an unbeaten 64, with Cox occupying the No. 3 position after Jacob Bethell’s injury, to leave England in a strong position at the close.
