Rwanda awarded hosting rights for 2027 and 2028 Kagame Cups

The Council for East and Central African Football (CECAFA) has officially granted Rwanda the rights to host the next two editions of the Kagame Cup. The country will host the regional club championship in both 2027 and 2028.

The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) submitted a request to host these upcoming tournaments following the successful organization of the 2026 edition. Rwanda was also the host for the current tournament, which saw Rayon Sport secure the title after a 2-1 extra-time victory against Gor Mahia at Kigali's Amahoro stadium.

Since 2002, the Kagame Cup has received financial support from Rwandan President Paul Kagame, providing $60,000 in prize money. There are reports suggesting that the prize money for the upcoming 2027 and 2028 editions will see an increase.

In addition to the club championship news, CECAFA has called for bids from member associations interested in hosting the Senior Challenge Cup. This competition has been on hiatus since it was held in Ethiopia in 2021. Tanzania remains the current champion after defeating Burundi in the last final, while Uganda holds the record with 15 titles, including their most recent win in 2019.
