Semi Ajayi nominated for Premier League award after 2-0 win
Nigeria defender Semi Ajayi has been shortlisted for the Premier League Player of the Week award after Hull City beat Manchester United 2-0.
Semi Ajayi has been nominated for the Premier League Player of the Week award after scoring in Hull City’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United. The Nigerian defender marked his return to Premier League football with the opening goal at the MKM Stadium.
Ajayi struck in the 17th minute to give Hull the lead in their opening match of the season. Nobel Mendy added a second goal in the 38th minute, leaving Hull with a two-goal advantage before half-time.
The 58-cap Super Eagles player then helped Hull protect their lead as Manchester United failed to score. His performance earned him the Player of the Match award at the end of the game, strengthening his case for the weekly Premier League honour.
The nomination came after Ajayi’s first Premier League appearance in five years. The 32-year-old centre-back had not featured in the competition during that period before returning to the division with Hull City.
Ajayi is competing against Rayan Cherki, Julio Enciso, Jack Hinshelwood, Martin Ødegaard, Cole Palmer, Mamadou Sangaré and Anton Stach for the first Player of the Week award of the 2026/27 season. The shortlist recognises performances from the opening matchweek.
For Hull, the victory provides a strong start to the campaign against Manchester United. Ajayi’s goal and defensive contribution made him central to the result, while the clean sheet completed a notable return to Premier League action for the Nigeria international.
