Shields returns to middleweight to challenge Kaye Scott

Claressa Shields will attempt to reclaim her former middleweight titles this Saturday night at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. The undefeated Shields, who holds an 18-0 professional record, faces unified WBC and WBA middleweight champion Kaye Scott. This bout marks the first time a women's boxing event will headline at the home of the Atlanta Hawks.

Shields is returning to the 160-pound division after a period spent competing in higher weight classes, including a stint as the undisputed heavyweight champion. Despite the drop in weight, Shields expressed confidence in her strength during the final press conference. She stated that she feels in peak form and expects her power to be evident once the fight begins.

Kaye Scott enters the contest with a professional record of 5-1-1, but she argues that her limited professional experience does not reflect her true capability. The Australian champion highlighted her extensive amateur background, which includes over 120 bouts and silver medals at the 2016 World Championships and the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Scott, who became the unified middleweight champion in December 2025, believes her experience has prepared her for this challenge.

The event carries local significance, as Atlanta and Fulton County have proclaimed August 15 as "Claressa Shields Day." The card features several other world title opportunities, including Caroline Veyre against Bernice Ferreira for the WBC super featherweight title and Danielle Perkins against Olivia Curry for the WBA light heavyweight championship. Ashleyann Lozada also competes against Paulette Cuesta for the WBA Gold super bantamweight title.

On the men's side of the card, unbeaten middleweights Troy Isley and Joseph Hicks will fight, while Atif Oberlton faces Roamer Alexis Angulo. Ernesto Mercado is also scheduled to defend his unbeaten record against Emmanuel Tagoe. The main event remains a pivotal moment for Scott, who seeks to become the first professional boxer to defeat Shields.
