Sonny Liston's mysterious boxing life and death remembered again

Sonny Liston remains one of boxing’s most difficult champions to understand, decades after his death in late 1970. His body was found at his Las Vegas home, where he had apparently been dead for several days. His death was officially attributed to natural causes, although the circumstances continued to raise questions.

Liston’s path to the heavyweight title began in severe poverty. Born into a large sharecropping family in rural Arkansas, he was bullied because of his size and suffered repeated beatings from his father. His official birth year was 1932, although he may have been born several years earlier, adding to the uncertainty surrounding his identity.

He was jailed for armed robbery before a prison chaplain introduced him to boxing. Liston quickly won the prison heavyweight title and found a way to turn his strength into a career. After leaving prison, further trouble with the law led him away from St Louis and towards Philadelphia, where his professional rise accelerated.

Liston’s power and intimidating style carried him through the leading contenders before he faced heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson. Liston stopped Patterson in the opening round and repeated the result in their rematch. Those victories established him as one of the division’s most feared fighters, but they did not prevent his reign from ending against Cassius Clay in February 1964.

Clay overwhelmed Liston after a tense build-up, with Liston retiring on his stool after six rounds. A second meeting the following year ended in the first round when Clay dropped him with a right hand. Liston continued boxing after losing the title, winning 15 more times before closing his career with victory over Chuck Wepner in 1970.

Broke and living with his wife, Geraldine, in Las Vegas, Liston was suspected of returning to criminal circles, although the claims were never established. Geraldine later described returning from a trip to find an unpleasant smell in the home and discovering her husband’s body. His life and death were revisited in the 1995 HBO documentary *Sonny Liston: The Mysterious Life and Death of a Champion*, which presented a portrait of a powerful fighter shaped by violence, insecurity and public distrust.
