Africa Cup cricket tournament planned for 2027 launch

The Africa Cricket Association intends to launch the Africa Cup in 2027. Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani stated that the new tournament is designed to become the flagship international competition for cricket on the continent.

A tri-nations series involving Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Namibia will serve as the foundation for this initiative. The series is scheduled to begin on August 28 in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. This competition aims to establish regular, competitive international cricket between the three neighbouring nations to support the long-term development of the sport in Africa.

The upcoming series also acts as a precursor to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia will co-host the World Cup in October and November next year. This will mark the return of the tournament to Africa for the first time in 24 years, following the 2003 edition.

Twelve venues across the three participating countries have been selected to host the World Cup matches. While South Africa and Zimbabwe have hosted the event previously, this will be the first time Namibia hosts the senior tournament. Namibia recently hosted the ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup earlier this year.

Cricket Namibia CEO Johan Muller noted that the commitment from Cricket South Africa and Zimbabwe Cricket reflects a shared goal to expand the game across the region. The tri-series in Windhoek is intended to build momentum ahead of the co-hosted World Cup.
