Sundowns coach Cardoso criticises officials over Mokoena tackle

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Cardoso has questioned the officiating standards in South African football following a heavy tackle on Teboho Mokoena. The incident occurred during Sundowns' 3-2 victory against Polokwane City in the MTN8 quarterfinal last weekend.

Cardoso argued that referee Philangenkosi Khumalo failed to protect the Bafana Bafana international. The coach noted that the aggressive challenge against the 29-year-old midfielder did not result in a yellow card. Mokoena was subsequently unavailable for Sundowns' Betway Premiership opener against TS Galaxy on Tuesday night.

The coach expressed concern regarding the treatment of high-profile players on domestic soil. He stated that South Africa must ensure players are shielded from such aggression, particularly after their performances in the World Cup. Cardoso suggested that the lack of disciplinary action for the tackle was unacceptable.

Cardoso also used the incident to highlight the absence of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the country. He pointed out that nations such as Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Mauritania, and Tunisia utilize VAR, while Benin and Ghana have begun experimental training. He noted that match officials have acknowledged the need for VAR to rectify errors.

Comparing the disciplinary records of league teams, Cardoso claimed Sundowns are often penalised unfairly. He stated that Sundowns received 53 yellow cards last season, while Orlando Pirates received approximately half that amount. He argued that the team's high card count, which reached a maximum of 58, shows they are frequently targeted for fouls that are milder than those committed by rivals.
