Super Eagles target Atubolu joins Onyedika at Eintracht Frankfurt

Noah Atubolu has completed his move from SC Freiburg to Eintracht Frankfurt, where he will join fellow Nigeria-eligible player Raphael Onyedika. The 24-year-old goalkeeper arrives on an initial season-long loan, with Frankfurt holding an option to buy that could become mandatory if agreed conditions are fulfilled.

Atubolu was born in Freiburg on 25 May 2002 and has Nigerian heritage, making him eligible to represent the Super Eagles. He has played for Germany at youth level, including with the Under-21 side, but has not appeared for the country in a competitive senior fixture. That leaves open the possibility of a future switch to Nigeria under FIFA eligibility rules.

The goalkeeper spent 11 years in Freiburg’s academy after joining it at 13. He made his Bundesliga debut during the 2023-24 season and leaves the club after recording 125 competitive appearances and 38 clean sheets. His final campaign at Freiburg was particularly productive, with 49 matches played across all competitions and 11 clean sheets.

Frankfurt have added Atubolu as they prepare for the 2026-27 season. He is expected to compete for the starting goalkeeper role under coach Adi Hütter, giving the Bundesliga club another player with a possible connection to Nigeria.

Onyedika joined Frankfurt from Club Brugge earlier this month and signed a contract running until June 2031. The midfielder wears the number 25 shirt, and his arrival means Atubolu will now share a club environment with a current Super Eagles player.

Nigeria coach Eric Chelle already has Maduka Okoye, Stanley Nwabali and Arthur Okonkwo among his goalkeeping options. Atubolu’s move strengthens the attention around his international future as Nigeria targets qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup.
