Timothy Weah rejects Sunderland interest for bigger project

Timothy Weah is unlikely to join Sunderland this summer despite interest from the club. The 26-year-old American winger is seeking a sporting project that offers a greater challenge than what the Championship side can provide.

Marseille are currently looking to sell players to reduce their wage bill and increase available funds. Weah joined the French club from Juventus on a loan deal with an obligation to buy last summer. The move was made permanent for €14m, securing his place at the club until 2030.

Sunderland made contact with the player before the start of the World Cup. While Villarreal have also shown interest in the versatile attacker, Weah has not responded to the approach from Régis Le Bris' side. He is expected to remain in Ligue 1 unless a club offers a significantly higher level of competition.

During the previous campaign, Weah featured in 41 matches. He primarily played as a right wing-back or right-back, recording three goals and four assists. His manager, Bruno Génésio, has valued the player for his profile, versatility, and fighting spirit.

Although Marseille's economic situation makes a sale possible, Weah's personal ambitions remain the primary obstacle for interested clubs. He is looking for a move that represents a step up in sporting quality.
