Titans Tournament to bring 12 teams together in Bulawayo basketball

The inaugural Titans Basketball Tournament will bring 12 teams together for two days of competition in Bulawayo this weekend. The event is being staged in partnership with the Bulawayo Basketball Association as a new addition to the city’s basketball calendar.

Eight teams will compete in the men’s section: hosts Titans, Gwanda Rebels, Scorpions, Schools of Mines, Nust, Riverdale Academy, Lakers and Mavericks. The women’s tournament will feature Titans, Nust, Lakers and Phoenix.

The tournament was established by Titans Basketball Club founder and president Tracey Norma Phiri, with the organisers aiming to make it a regular event. Its purpose extends beyond the results, with the competition intended to strengthen links between clubs and give players more opportunities to develop.

The event will be held under the message “Say No to Drugs!!!”, while the #CleanSport campaign will form part of its community focus. Organisers are using the tournament to promote discipline, sportsmanship and healthy choices among young athletes, alongside the basketball programme.

The men’s field includes clubs, a university side, a school-based team and emerging teams, creating a setting for coaches to assess combinations in competitive conditions. Players will also face opponents they may not meet regularly during the normal season, giving them a chance to test their progress and compete for recognition.

The women’s competition provides four sides with another platform to gain match experience and support the continued growth of the women’s game in Bulawayo. Titans’ organisers hope the debut will lead to a larger tournament in future, with more teams and stronger sponsorship support.

DA Timbers, Sportszone, Cupidhouse and Evergold have backed the event. For Titans, the weekend will introduce a tournament they hope can grow with each edition, while participating clubs will use the competition to prepare, develop talent and build relationships across Bulawayo basketball.
