Tottenham's Mohammed Kudus returns to Ghana after grandmother's death
Tottenham midfielder Mohammed Kudus has returned to Ghana to mourn his grandmother, with the family’s funeral arrangements yet to be announced.
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mohammed Kudus has travelled to Ghana following the death of his grandmother. The 26-year-old was seen at his family home with relatives, friends and other well-wishers who had gathered to support the family.
Kudus, dressed in white, attended an adua, an Islamic prayer gathering held to seek Allah’s mercy for someone who has died. The ceremony is commonly observed in Ghana and other West African countries, often on the third day after a burial. No details of the funeral arrangements have been announced.
The Ghana international is believed to have missed a Tottenham training session while attending the family gathering. His absence has created uncertainty around his availability for Tottenham’s Premier League opener against Brentford on August 22 at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Kudus was already working to regain full fitness after a difficult period. He missed the second half of last season because of injury and was subsequently absent from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He has also not appeared in any of Tottenham’s pre-season matches, although he has continued with an individual training programme.
Manager Roberto De Zerbi may therefore have to reconsider his options on the right wing if Kudus cannot take part in the opening fixture. Mikey Moore could be considered for that position, while Tottenham assess Kudus’ situation following his return to Ghana.
The family gathering comes as Kudus seeks to support his relatives during the mourning period. His availability for the Brentford match will depend on his return and readiness after the bereavement, alongside the fitness work he has been undertaking away from the team’s pre-season games.
