UEFA threatens FIFA boycott over commercial revenue proposal

UEFA has moved to boycott all FIFA men's and women's national team competitions. The 55 member federations of the European confederation voted unanimously for this action in response to a FIFA proposal known as FIFA Forward Enterprise.

The dispute began when details emerged of a plan to create a commercial subsidiary valued at approximately $20 billion. This entity would have allowed private investors to purchase stakes in the future revenues of the World Cup. To secure support for the move, FIFA offered its 211 member federations individual one-off payments of $20 million, subject to a mid-September deadline.

Although FIFA President Gianni Infantino withdrew the plan and issued a formal apology in early August, UEFA maintains that its conditions for returning to FIFA competitions have not been satisfied. The confederation demands the total withdrawal of the proposal and binding guarantees that FIFA will never again allow private ownership of its governance or competitions.

UEFA is currently evaluating legal options, including arbitration and regulatory complaints. The confederation has also expressed a desire to end Infantino's presidency, stating he has lost the confidence of the footballing world. This tension follows a history of disagreement, including UEFA's successful opposition to a biennial World Cup and its resistance to expanding the tournament format.

While UEFA, CONCACAF, and the Asian Football Confederation joined the initial revolt, the movement lacks global unity. The CAF executive committee met in Rabat in early August and unanimously reaffirmed its support for Infantino. Additionally, Mexico broke away from CONCACAF to back the FIFA president, while Argentina and CONMEBOL have indicated they will not support an accelerated push against his leadership.
