Unam sport grows despite funding and facility challenges

Sporting activities at the University of Namibia (Unam) are seeing higher levels of student involvement and more competitive opportunities. Ryan Gomachab, the Student Representative Council (SRC) representative for the 2025 academic year, noted that while progress is evident, the institution faces significant hurdles regarding funding, equipment, and infrastructure.

Gomachab highlighted the success of Unam FC winning the NFA Cup and the return of the Unam Hockey Club as major achievements. Football, rugby, netball, basketball, hockey, and chess remain the most active disciplines. He attributed this growth to student passion and the availability of competitive platforms, even as teams struggle with limited training times due to shared facilities.

Infrastructure remains a primary concern as the current facilities face pressure from the rising number of students and teams. The darts club, for instance, currently lacks a specific venue for training despite participating in the inter-house league. Gomachab stated that the university requires better maintenance, more equipment, and improved access to training spaces to meet demand.

Financial constraints also impact student-athletes, particularly during travel outside of Windhoek. During a recent away competition, Unam Hockey Club players were required to organize their own accommodation. Gomachab suggested that the university's Sports Office should increase its support for students competing away from the capital and urged the institution to seek partnerships with businesses and sponsors to supplement SRC resources.

Upcoming events for the remainder of 2026 include the PSTBET Intercampus Tournament from 26 to 29 August, which will feature volleyball, netball, and football. The university also plans to host the Unam Cultural Fest Tournament and the Mrs Magriet Mainga Sports Tournament. The latter is an inter-faculty competition involving chess, netball, and football to honor the late Dean of Students.

To improve the sporting environment, Gomachab identified three immediate priorities: communication, funding, and facilities. He specifically called for the development of a dedicated cricket pitch, better equipment for teams in the Unam Home League, and more opportunities for student representation.
