Veritas University wins inaugural NBA REC University Tournament

Veritas University won the first NBA REC University Tournament by defeating University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) with a score of 41-36. The championship match took place on August 8 at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Sports Center.

The two-day competition featured eight university teams from Nigeria. The participating schools were Veritas University, UNIABUJA, UNILAG, Afe Babalola University (ABUAD), University of Ibadan (UI), Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and Lead City University.

After the group stage concluded on the first day, Veritas, ABUAD, UNIABUJA, and UNILAG moved into the semi-finals. On the second day of the tournament, UNILAG took third place after winning 57-50 against ABUAD. Veritas secured the championship trophy by overcoming UNIABUJA in the final game.

ABUAD's Anthony Chioke earned the tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. The event was organized through a partnership between the NBA, Future Concerns Nigeria Limited, and Munch It.

NBA REC serves as a recreational basketball platform for players aged 18 and above. The tournament aims to improve basketball experiences within university, community, and adult settings. This initiative follows previous NBA efforts in Nigeria, such as NBA Crossover and NBA Meets Art, to support grassroots basketball development.
